Bless you, that was the problem. I was using a bulleted list, but (a) put a space between the bullet and the text, and (b) tried to create a paragraph beneath a bulleted point that didn't start a new bullet. (Like when you press ctrl-enter in Word, continuing under the same bullet, still indented at the same level.) I guess I will have to use &nsbp;.
