Categorising Pages Becoming Awkward

The number of categories in the wiki I'm running are growing and, as they do so, the scroll down option on the edit page seems to be getting a little cumbersome.
Does anyone have a way round this (apart from fewer categories!)?
I was thinking of trying to add a categorise tab on the page (in the same way there are tags for edit and history). By clicking on this, the user would get a list of check boxes or some such and probably a request new category option. Is that possible? And if so, how would I start going about it?
